HDMI Adapters

Need to connect your VGA or DVI equipped device to a unit with an HDMI port? Then you need an HDMI adapter. They come in very handy if, for example, you want to connect your desktop or laptop computer to an LCD television. There are HDMI converters or adapters available which allow you to convert VGA, DVI or component signals to HDMI.

DVI to HDMI

For converting DVI (digital video) to HDMI, you can choose to use an adapter, or alternatively a cable - adapters tend to be cheaper. Since DVI provides a video-only signal, if you require audio you would need to use a separate cable, or buy an all-in-one DVI to HDMI + audio converter. You should not lose any quality during the conversion from DVI to HDMI, since they operate to very similar standards. If you opt for a cable solution, make sure to choose one with ferrite chokes on each end; these are designed to suppress interference.

VGA to HDMI

Converting from VGA to HDMI is somewhat more complicated since VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. Also, as with DVI, VGA does not provide an audio signal. The best solution in this instance is a combined VGA to HDMI + audio converter. These normally take the form of a small box with VGA and audio in connectors, and an HDMI out.

Component Video to HDMI

There are several products on the market which combine component, VGA and audio conversion in one unit. They can supply a 720p signal (1280 x 720 resolution) to any HDMI-equipped display, together with audio.
